Ballooning history is short... The first manned flight occurred November 21, 1783 in France using a balloon made of paper and silk and a crude fire in a basket. Without a practical means to keep the air hot for a very long period of time, it was the gas balloon which came to dominate balloon flight until 1960. It was not until 1960 that the modern hot air balloon and propane burner were invented by Paul E. (Ed) Yost on October 22, 1960. He flew his new balloon in free flight for the first time. The envelope was made of nylon and the heat source was a propane burner. He used a "pilot's chair" for a gondolaEd Yost's invention of the modern hot air balloon and propane burner made the sport of hot air ballooning affordable and practical for the masses for the first time. Today balloons come in many color and designs making it possible for thousands of people to experience the thrill of gliding on the wind that those first Frenchmen felt on that first flight in 1783.
